Local Information for
Breckenridge, Colorado
It all began in 1859 at the peak of the gold rush. Miners poured into the upper Blue River valley in search of the precious metal, and some years later found the largest gold nugget ever unearthed in Colorado - a 13-pounder named Tom’s Baby. Historic Breckenridge is full of such colorful stories. For more, take the Summit Historical Society’s walking tour of the Breckenridge Historic District, one of Colorado’s largest with more than 200 designated sites.
While the Victorian flavor of the 1800s lives on in the town’s historic and modern architecture, there are few other similarities between the once-struggling mining town and the thriving resort area that is home to one of the most popular ski areas in North America. Perhaps best known for its real-town feeling, its unreal skiing, and its famous après ski scene, Breckenridge calls itself “the perfect ski town.”
The town offers many activities and events year-round. More than 200 shops offer everything from jewelry to fine art galleries to t-shirts. Coffee shops abound and a variety of restaurants offer something for everyone - whether you’re looking for upscale or affordable, for Cajun, Tapas Bars, filet mignon, sushi or pizza.
Two ice skating rinks, a Nordic ski center, and a variety of other activities such as sledding, horse-drawn carriage rides, snowmobile tours and ballooning are available in the winter. Summer offerings include the 27-hole Breckenridge Golf Club, the Alpine Slide at Breckenridge Ski Resort, live music at the Riverwalk Center and miles of hiking and biking trails in the White River National Forest.
At any time of year, families can enjoy the state-of-the-art Breckenridge Recreation Center or watch live performances at the Backstage Theater. Special events in Breckenridge include the renowned International Snow Sculpting Championships, world-class sports competitions and holiday celebrations. Traditional summer events kick off with the Taste of Breckenridge in May and continue through September with the Oktoberfest and the Breckenridge Festival of Film.
